Master Terafan’s Laurel scroll

Terafan selected folio 96 of The Grandes Heures of Jean de Berry as the basis for his scroll. The original is approximately 12" x 16", and the scroll is 16" x 20". Materials are Opaline vellum, W&N paint, and Sumi ink. I used Tape and Brause nibs in a dip pen. The gold leaf is laid on a gesso containing hide glue, calcium carbonate, honey, and a dab of yellow ochre. The gesso was burnished both before and after the gold was laid for maximum smoothness.
